E-signature software for small businesses

E-signature tools replace print-sign-scan with a link: you upload a document, place signature fields, and the signer clicks through on any device. Every product here produces a completion record (often called an audit trail or certificate) showing who signed and when.

Where they differ is volume and workflow. Entry plans often cap how many documents you can send each month; higher tiers add templates, bulk send, payments, branding and integrations with CRMs. Pricing is almost always per sender, not per signer — the people you send to never need an account.

Scores are DocPicker's editorial ratings, calculated the same way for every product — see how we review. "Starting price" is the lowest published subscription price per month; one-time licences are shown separately. Nothing on this page is paid placement.

How to choose e-signature

  • Count senders, not signers

You pay for the people who send documents. Recipients sign for free.

  • Look for the monthly send limit

Many entry plans cap documents or "envelopes" per month or year. If you send more than a handful a week, check the limit on each product page.

  • Templates pay for themselves

If you send the same NDA, lease or onboarding pack repeatedly, reusable templates are the feature to pay for.

  • Annual billing is the default price

Most vendors advertise the per-month price of an annual plan. Our tables show the billing period next to every price.

Popular e-signature comparisons

E-Signature: frequently asked questions

Are electronic signatures legally binding in the US and EU?

In the US, the ESIGN Act and UETA generally give e-signatures the same legal effect as handwritten ones. In the EU, eIDAS defines simple, advanced and qualified electronic signatures. Some document types (wills, certain court filings) have exceptions — ask a lawyer for anything unusual.

Is there a free e-signature tool?

Some vendors offer a permanent free plan with a small monthly limit or self-signing only. Tick "Free plan" in the filters to see them.

Do signers need to create an account?

No. With every tool in this category, recipients sign through a link in their email or a text message.

What is an audit trail?

A record attached to the signed document that lists each event — sent, viewed, signed — with timestamps and usually IP addresses. It is what you would rely on if a signature were ever disputed.
